Houston: The subtropical experience
Houston, the fourth largest city in the United States, has a total area of 600 square miles. It is located on the coastal plain of gulf. The city was built on forestland, swamps, and marshes. It consists of four major bayous and three tributaries. It has a population of nearly 2.2 million and nearly 90 languages are spoken in this city. Largest communities of Indians and Pakistanis are also present in this city.
Houston has a humid and subtropical climate. Summers are hot and winters are cool. January is the coolest month. It receives high amount of rainfall annually. Sometimes thunderstorms and tornadoes are also seen. There is a rare snowfall.
The city of Houston was incorporated in the year 1837. A chamber of commerce was established in the year 1840. In the year 1860, it has emerged as a commercial hub for the export of cotton. Oil was discovered in the year 1901 that had lead to the development of petroleum industry. Houston became the most populous city in Texas by the tear 1930. During the Second World War, manufacturing plants and petro chemical refineries were constructed. There was an economic boom in the year 1950. In 1961, the city’s aerospace was created. There was a population boom during 1970s and a lot of employment opportunities were generated in the petroleum industry.
Houston is famous for its energy industries especially in the oil and natural gas industries. It has nearly 600 exploration and production firms. The other major industries include chemical industry, manufacturing, transportation, space exploration, computer software, engineering, finance, marketing, processing, and nanotechnology.
Houston is rich and diverse in its culture. Several events and festivals like Pride Parade, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Art Car Parade, Houston Greek Festival etc, are celebrated here.
Downtown Houston, Wells Fargo Plaza, Williams Tower and JPMorgan Chase Tower are some of the architectural works in this city.
The places of interest include the Theatre District, the Museum District, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Zoo, Lake Houston Park, Memorial Park, Discovery Green, Houston Symphony of Orchestra, Hobby Center for the performing Arts and Space Center Houston are some of the interesting places to visit.
Baseball, football, tennis, golf and racing are some of the sports held in this city.
The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County operates public services like light rails, buses, metros, lift vans and railways in the city.
Houston Airport System is the 4th largest in the United Sates. It has George Bush Intercontinental Airport on the north and William P. Hobby Airport on the south. The airport offers all facilities like shopping, parking, medicinal clinics, dining and many more.
